GAME SUMMARY After the success of Nigeria in 1996, the gold medal in the olympic football tournament remained in Africa thanks to Cameroon’s victory over favored Spain at the end of a thrilling final witnessed by a new olympic attendance record (104,098 at Sydney Olympic Stadium). After coming back from a 2-0 deficit at halftime, the “Indomitable Lions” drew at 2-2 at the end of regulation and then completed the upset in a penalty shoot-out to claim not only Cameroon’s first medal in the football tournament, but the country’s first ever gold in any Olympic sport.
Spain had a perfect start to the game when, after just 78 seconds, Xavi curled a free kick low into the side netting. Things could have been much better for the Spaniards three minutes later, when they were awarded a penalty kick following a foul on José Mari in the Cameroonian area. Xavi, full of confident after his goal, picked up the ball and walked to the penalty spot, but Angulo decided to take the shot instead… and what a bad decision that was, because his weak kick was easily saved by 16-year-old goalkeeper Kameni (the youngest player to participate in an olympic final and win the gold medal). Spain controlled the game during the first half, while Cameroon were trying to impose their physical play. The Spaniards were struggling to set their rhythm due to the constant fouls committed by the Africans (which went unpunished for the most part), but always seemed on top. In injury time, Gabri—who had come on for injured Spanish captain Toni Velamazán after 27 minutes—put Spain up 2-0 after escaping the offside trap and beating an onrushing Kameni, and at halftime Spain looked set for their second gold medal in the olympic football competition (after their 1992 triumph in Barcelona).
After dominating the first half, everything began to go wrong for Spain in the second forty-five minutes. Cameroon, who might have looked dead and buried at halftime, staged a stunning recovery with two quick goals. Only eight minutes after the restart, the Africans pulled one back when M’Boma’s cross took a deflection off Amaya’s chest and bounced past Aranzubia. Five minutes later, Cameroon completed their comeback when M’Boma again fed Eto’o, Marchena missed the offside trap, and the Real Madrid attacker (loaned to RCD Mallorca) kept his cool to make it 2-2. Spain tried then to react and take control of the game again, but at this time the match had turned into an open affair, with a constant flow on both ends. In minute 70, the Europeans suffered a blow when Gabri was sent off for a late and high tackle on Alnoudji. In injury time, the Mexican referee Felipe Ramos Rizo red-carded José Mari because he adjudged that the AC Milan attacker had feigned a penalty (when in fact he had just tripped in the area).
Down two men, Spain was left to defend for all of the extra-time, trying to reach the penalty shoot-out. Even in this situation, both Cameroon and Spain came desperately close to scoring a “Golden Goal” during this additional period. With eight men defending and only Ferrón up front, Aranzubia became the hero for his team, as he saved several close-range shots. Then, against all odds, Spain could have snatched victory when Capdevila crashed a free kick against the crossbar. In the last minute, the Africans thought they had scored the game winner when Eto’o escaped the Spanish defense to beat Aranzubia, but the referee disallowed the goal for offside (although TV replays show that the goal was in fact correctly scored, because Eto’o had started running from his own half).
After 120 minutes, penalty shots had to decide the champion for the first time in an olympic football final. All the players were on target except central defender Amaya, who compounded his misery after his earlier own goal by sending the ball to the crossbar. |
