GAME SUMMARY Nigeria became the first African team to win the gold medal in the olympic football tournament after a dramatic win over Argentina. With a torrent of offensive football and a great physical display, the Green Eagles overwhelmed the South Americans for most of the game and were justly rewarded with a last-gasp winner scored by Amuneke. Before that, the clash of two opposite conceptions of football—the talented but somewhat anarchic Nigeria and the more disciplined and balanced Argentina—almost fell on the South American side, who scored two goals rather against the run of play and then tried to defend their advantage. However, the Nigerians didn’t change their fresh game even when they fell behind twice (the second time after a dubious penalty call) and outmuscled their rivals with a great comeback in the second half.
Argentina had an optimum start when, as early as the third minute, Ariel Ortega played Hernán Crespo on the right wing with a defense-splitting pass, and the latter’s cross was headed in by Claudio López. The South Americans thought that they could control the game with their midfield pressing, but Nigeria had other ideas. With a constant physical display and the dangerous runs of Okocha, Babangida and Kanu, the Africans pegged their rivals back. After Amokachi had shot at the post, Céléstine Babayaro equalized in minute 28 by heading in a Kanu cross. Nigeria continued pressing hard during the rest of the first half, but the Argentine defense stood firm.
After the restart, and quite against the run of play, the South Americans took again an early lead when the Italian referee Pierluigi Collina called a penalty for a dubious foul in the African area. Hernán Crespo took the kick and tied Bebeto as tournament’s top scorer (six goals each). The Green Eagles didn’t give up though, and maintained their bet for an offensive and fresh football, which was finally rewarded in minute 74 when Amokachi smashed in a loose ball. With three minutes to go, while Nigeria was pressing hard for the winner, Claudio López had a golden opportunity to kill the game and give the gold medal to Argentina, but he missed. Soon after, Amuneke was the African hero when he scored a dramatic winner in the last minute (although the South Americans protested that two Nigerian players were in an offside position). |
