GAME SUMMARY Brazil, after playing the most exciting football of the tournament, lost their second olympic final in a row. The Brazilians, aware that the Soviet team was superior in physical fitness, gave it all during the first 45 minutes, and took the lead after half an hour thanks to Romário. Although the Soviet Union pressed hard during the second half, their monotonous and predictable play didn’t pose a serious threat to Taffarel. However, at the hour mark the French referee Biguet adjudged that a seemingly innocuous challenge of Luís Carlos Winck to Mikhajlichenko in the Brazilian area should be punished with a penalty, and Dobrovol’skij equalized from the spot. The South Americans looked rather shocked after this goal and didn’t have the strenght to impose their rhythm. In the extra-time, with Brazil again on the attack, Mikhajlichenko broke free to assist Savichev, who lobbed the ball over an advanced Taffarel to score the winner.
Brazil set the tone during the first half with their dribblings and interpassing skills, while the Soviet Union held on with a disciplined defense waiting for the Brazilians to exhaust their energies. A series of dead ball situations in the Russian goal were readily saved by Kharin and his defenders. As the half progressed, the Brazilian rhythm decreased and the Europeans were able to get more into the game and in fact established a slight edge. In minute 29, however, Brazil took the lead when the tournament's top scorer Romário netted the ball in the far post after a corner kick. Although the game was still open, and both Kharin and Taffarel were instrumental in saving more goals, it looked as if Brazil had the edge they needed to control the remaining time with their game skills.
After halftime, Anatolij Byshovets brought on Savichev in place of Narbekovas to add more thrust up front, and the Torpedo Moskva forward almost made an immediate impression when he forced Taffarel to make a fine save. Mikhajlichenko and Kuznetsov established progressive control in midfield, and Brazil’s defense began to come under pressure. For all their domination, however, the Europeans were not able to create clear-cut chances in front of Taffarel, and it looked as if Brazil was closer to make it 2-0 on the counterattack. Then, in minute 60, and rather against the run of play, the Soviet Union was awarded a dubious penalty which Dobrovol’skij converted to make it 1-1. Although the South Americans tried to react, their attacks lacked the patient build-up work that they had before, and the Soviets didn’t have much trouble frustrating them while waiting for an isolate chance on the counterattack. With time running out, Carlos Alberto Silva staked everything on a single card and brought on Edmar and João Paulo instead of Neto and Bebeto. João Paulo in particular posed all sorts of problems for the Soviet defense with his swift moves, and after one of them Romário was brought down in the area in what looked like a penalty, but the referee waved play on. The Europeans defended stoutly until the final whistle (in spite of yet another penalty claim in their area, a few minutes from time).
So, for the first time since 1936, an extra-time was required to decide the olympic winner. The pace of the game until then (and also the exhausting semifinals against Italy and West Germany) had taken its toll and the rhythm now slowed down. As a result of the players’ increasing tiredness, the game was marred by constant fouling and a nervous atmosphere on the pitch. The Brazilians still kept their attacking instincts and had a golden chance to score in minute 100 when João Paulo shot on goal from outside the area, but Kharin was ready to save it. Only three minutes later, however, Savichev found himself at the end of a perfect counterattack and lifted the ball beautifully over an advanced Taffarel to make it 2-1. This late goal was a game killer, and the solid Soviet defense—in spite of the expelling of Tatarchuk after a second bookable offense—frustrated the desperate Brazilian attacks to claim their second olimpic gold. Brazil (who whas also reduced to ten men after Edmar was sent off with a straight red card) had a last chance to equalize just before time, but André Cruz’s shot was parried by Kharin and history repeated itself for the South Americans, who left the pitch in tears. |
