*NOTE: The Spanish olympic squad was made up of amateur players (aficionados), who played mostly in minor leagues or B teams. STADIUM: Vasil Levski (Sofija) DATE: 24-11-1971 (20:00 h) Attendance: 10.000 Referee: Fernando dos Santos Leite (POR) Goals: 1-0 (Petkov 8’); 2-0 (Vasilev 12’); 3-0 (Mikhajlov 33’); 4-0 (Mikhajlov 44’); 4-1 (Manolín Cuesta 45’); 4-2 (Quini 52’); 5-2 (Mikhajlov 54’); 5-3 (Quini 64’); 6-3 (Velichkov 65’); 7-3 (Bonev [p.] 72’); 8-3 (Vasilev 76’) [Incidents: In a game full of incidents, Guisasola (min. 75), García Remón (min. 76) and Grande (min. 88) were all sent off. After Guisasola’s expelling, which topped a series of very controversial decisions against Spain by the Portuguese referee during the game—two Bulgarian goals were originally disallowed for offside but later allowed—, the Spanish players surrounded Santos Leite to complain bitterly about Guisasola’s dismissal, and a minor crowd invasion ensued. However, in the middle of this chaos, the referee surprisingly allowed the game to continue, and Vasilev scored Bulgaria’s eighth goal by pushing the ball into an empty net, as even the Spanish goalkeeper was protesting in front of Santos Leite. When the pitch was finally cleared up, García Remón was also sent off. After the game, the three Portuguese officials, who were supposed to return home in the same flight as the Spanish team, cancelled their tickets and took a different airplane.] |
