GAME SUMMARY

Hungary and Bulgaria played the football final quite contrary to the olympic spirit, showing that winning at any price is far more important than the sheer joy of participating, and this attitude gave way to a quite crude and violent game, with as many as four players sent off. As the rest of eastern European teams, many of the Hungarian and Bulgarian players are in fact true professionals who legally compete in the Olympic Games as “amateurs” thanks to the sponsorship of their governments, and this always gives the communist countries a clear advantage over the rest of participants in the olympic football tournament (in fact, only eastern European teams have won the gold medal since 1952). On this occasion, besides, the hidden professionalism of the two finalists gave rise to a very violent game.

Bulgaria controlled the early stages of the final with an iron mark on the most dangerous Hungarian players, aware that their rivals were superior in talent and game concepts but not in muscle. After a period of domination, the Bulgarians took the lead in minute 20 when Veselinov sent home a cross from Georgiev, and this goal seemed to encourage them so much as to relax slightly their defensive precautions. When Menczel equalized for Hungary in minute 41, and just one minute later Antal Dunai made it 2-1 for the Magyars, the Bulgarians didn’t take this upset very nicely and reacted with harsh fouls on their rivals. In view of this outbreak of violence, the Mexican referee De Leo had no choice but to expel the offenders, and in quick succession Veselinov (min. 43), Ivkov (min. 44) and Mikhajlov (min. 44) were all shown red cards: the first two players for ugly tackles and the last one for throwing the ball at the referee in protest for his teammate Ivkov’s expelling.

The second half, with Hungary leading 2-1 and Bulgaria reduced to only eight players, was anything but a football match. The Bulgarians could do nothing but try to avoid more goals, while the Magyars—after securing victory four minutes into the half with another goal scored by Juhász by heading home an Antal Dunai’s cross—looked like they wouldn’t abuse their rivals any further. The apathetic game shown by Hungary displeased the 60,000 Mexican fans in Azteca Stadium, who complained against this attitude by throwing pillows onto the pitch. Antal Dunai still had time to score one more goal after narrowly beating the offside trap (although it wasn’t enough to beat Japanese Kunishige Kamamoto as the tournament top scorer) and five minutes from the end another player was sent off (on this occasion, the Hungarian Juhász).
