GAME SUMMARY

The final between Czechoslovakia and Hungary turned out to be the most interesting game in an otherwise mediocre olympic tournament, characterized by unattractive play and constant foul interruptions. With cold weather, a rain-soaked pitch and a very heavy ball, the game turned into a physical battle between two rivals who knew each other well. In the end, the tournament favorites Hungary renewed their 1952 olympic gold thanks to a group of very talented players, especially the emerging star Ferenc Bene (who became the tournament’s top scorer with 12 goals). The young Újpesti Dózsa’s attacker showed in Japan that he is a very complete player, who combines the intelligence of Nándor Hidegkuti, the shooting of Ferenc Puskás, the heading of Sándor Kocsis and the sprint of Zoltán Czibor.

Right from the start, the Czechs showed a more imaginative game than their rivals, although their combinations up front were plain and predictable. After an early Czech domination, the Hungarians mounted a series of dangerous attacks, with classy moves and long-range shooting. However, it was Brumovský and Geleta who came closer to score for Czechoslovakia in the first half.

Only two minutes into the second half, the Magyars took the lead when midfielder Csernai advanced on the right wing and shot on goal, the ball being deflected by the onrushing Vojta into his own net, out of the reach of goalkeeper Schmucker. The 1-0 lead gave the Hungarians the edge they needed to relax their game and start playing some fantasy football. On the hour mark came the second Magyar goal: center forward Bene—who had just hit the woodwork—stole the ball and went down the right flank almost to the goal line, where, from an impossible angle, he unleashed a powerful shot into the top corner. From that moment on, Hungary completely dominated the game with an intelligent play, looking like professional players rather than amateurs. Although Czechoslovakia pulled one goal back in minute 80 thanks to Brumovský (who had moved from his right wing position to that of center forward), the Magyars had no difficulty in controlling the ball in midfield to emerge olympic winners.
