Thus, for example, the goalscorers Georgi Dimitrov and Dimităr Milanov are called Georgi (Dimitrov) Nikolov and Dimităr (Milanov) Stojanov, respectively. The family names of Bulgarian players below are the most usual ones in football literature and local sources.] |

Tishchenko fractured his collarbone during the game, but remained on the pitch bandaged up because substitutions were not regulated yet in international football.] |

GAME SUMMARY After a rather mediocre final, the Soviet Union conquered the gold medal in the olympic football tournament with a hard-earned victory over Yugoslavia, who clearly missed some key players, left in Europe due to World Cup commitments.
The first half was a close affair with very few scoring opportunities, with both teams showing speed and good combination, but also defensive firmness. In minute 10, Yashin came into action to save a shot from left winger Mujić. In minute 22, the inside-right forward Papec scored for Yugoslavia, but the referee disallowed the goal for offside. Three minutes into the second half, the left winger Il’in scored the winner after being assisted by Isaev’s head. From that moment on, the Russians adopted a very defensive display trying to keep their lead, with constant timewasting. Although the Yugoslavs dominated then intensely, they failed to produce clear opportunities to equalize. Near the end, the game degenerated into an ugly brawl, with some players exchanging blows. The Australian crowd disliked the Soviet attitude and received their victory with whistles.
The best players of an otherwise poor final were midfielder Igor’ Netto (USSR) and inside-left forward Todor Veselinović (Yugoslavia). |
