OLYMPIC FOOTBALL TOURNAMENT 1948 — NATIONAL SQUADS

(In red, original names of countries and players)

*NOTE: London 1948 was the first Olympic Tournament where the player’s shirts featured back numbers (allowed in football since 1944). However, as no regulated substitutions were yet allowed in international competitions, only fielded players were assigned fixed numbers from 1 to 11 according to their tactical position (from up down and from left to right in the line-ups provided in the game details). The idea behind this numbering system in the Olympic Games was to check competitors with difficult names and simplify the announcement of results.
