GAME SUMMARY Spain ended Italy’s incredible 37-match unbeaten streak as Ferran Torres scored twice in a 2-1 win at San Siro in an entertaining Nations League semifinal. The European champions, trailing by two goals at the break, had to play the entire second half with ten men after captain Leonardo Bonucci was sent off, but showed real determination as they sought to avoid their first loss since a September 2018 defeat by Portugal. Luis Enrique gave a debut to Barcelona’s 17 year-old midfielder Gavi, who became Spain’s youngest ever player after just three starts for his club, but there was no hint of his inexperience in a confident and composed performance.
Ferran Torres put Spain ahead in the 17th minute, steering a left-wing cross from Mikel Oyarzabal past Italy keeper Gianluigi Donnarumma into the far corner. Donnarumma, booed by AC Milan fans angered at his recent move from the club to Paris St. Germain, nearly gifted Spain a second goal when he fumbled a harmless Marcos Alonso effort against the post, but Bonucci scrambled the ball clear. As Italy started to open up the Spanish defense, Federico Bernardeschi went close to an equalizer with a low drive from the right which Spain keeper Unai Simón pushed against the post, then Lorenzo Insigne missed a glorious chance, firing wide when in space on the edge of the box. The Azzurri, who beat Spain on penalties in the Euro 2020 semifinal in July, went a man down in the 42nd minute when Bonucci was sent off for a second yellow card after elbowing Sergio Busquets. Just before the break, Ferran Torres doubled the Spanish adventage when he was left unmarked to head in another fine cross from Oyarzabal.
Italy brought on Giorgio Chiellini at the break—the veteran defender and leader having been a surprise omission—and despite Spain playing with real swagger, the Azzurri stayed in the game. Federico Chiesa was the source of Italy’s brightest moments and he hit the post from a tight angle in the 61st minute. Oyarzabal headed wide after excellent work from another teenager, winger Yéremi Pino, and Marcos Alonso should have sealed the win in the 78th minute, but his low shot was well saved by Donnarumma. Italy ensured a tense end to the match by pulling a goal back seven minutes from the end, as Chiesa took advantage of yet another hesitant and soft Spanish defending, broke from the halfway line and slipped the ball to substitute Lorenzo Pellegrini to tap it into an open goal. However, Spain kept its cool and made his one-man advantage count in the dying minutes with his clinical interpassing game to kill off the game. |

GAME SUMMARY With a last-minute strike from Théo Hernández, world champion France recovered from two goals down to beat Belgium 3-2 in a thrilling Nations League semifinal in Turin and secured a place in Sunday's final against Spain. In a crazy end to the game, Belgium thought it had won the pulsating contest minutes earlier, but Romelu Lukaku’s late effort was ruled out for offside by VAR. After Spain’s impressive and inspiring victory over European champion Italy on Wednesday, this was another night of top quality football in a competition that was in danger of being forgotten amid the post-COVID calendar crush. The idea of the Nations League was to turn friendlies with nothing at stake into games that mattered, delivering football worth watching for the fans in the stadium and at home, and both goals have certainly been achieved this week.
Belgium and France came out with positive intent and it was clear from the onset, with both sides playing attacking 3-4-3 formations, that there was no chance of this being a cagey chess match. After an early punch exchange with plenty of running into open spaces, Yannick Carrasco fired Belgium ahead in the 37th minute, cutting in front from the left flank and surprising Hugo Lloris, firing past the wrong-footed French goalkeeper at the near post. Three minutes later, Lukaku doubled the Belgian lead with a superbly taken goal, turning sharply to lose his marker Lucas Hernández and blasting a thunderous drive past Lloris from a tight angle.
The 2-0 scoreline at the interval was somewhat harsh on France, who had played attractive football, with Kylian Mbappé and Karim Benzema linking up well with Antoine Griezmann in the three-pronged attack. It was Benzema who brought France back into the game in the 62nd minute, brilliantly twisting and turning to find space to drill home a shot from the edge of the box. Mbappé, who had not scored in his last six internationals, equalized with a penalty after German referee Daniel Siebert went to the pitchside monitor before ruling that Youri Tielemans had caught Griezmann’s foot as he challenged him. France was on top and searching for the winner in the last quarter, but three minutes from the end of regulation Lukaku looked to have won it for Belgium, steering home a cross from Carrasco. However, the Belgian celebrations were dampened by the VAR officials, how ruled out the goal for a marginal offside. Paul Pogba hit the top of the post with a curling free-kick before Les Blues grabbed a dramatic victory with a 90th-minute strike. Mbappé and Griezmann lined up down the right, the overlapping Benjamin Pavard fired in a low cross which an off-balance Toby Alderweireld could only get a slight touch on, diverting the ball to Théo, who beat keeper Thibaut Courtois with a pinpoint low drive. The defeat was yet another disappointment for Belgium’s “Golden Generation,” the world’s top-ranked team, whose trophy-less history now begins to look cursed in a similar fashion to Johan Cruijff’s Netherlands in the 70s. |

GAME SUMMARY Riding on goals from Nicolò Barella and Domenico Berardi, Italy edged Belgium 2-1 to finish third in the Nations League. After losing to Spain in the semifinal and having its record 37-match unbeaten run come to an end, the European champion had some consolation in front of its fans. The Italians returned to winning ways as Barella volleyed a poor corner clearance into the net one minute into the second half and Berardi added the second from the penalty spot in the 65th minute, after Timothy Castagne had brought down the tricky Federico Chiesa. Belgium claimed a late consolation goal in the 86th minute when substitute Charles de Ketelaere finished off a quick counterattack. Belgium, who was without Eden Hazard and Romelu Lukaku (both with muscle overload) and only brought on Kevin de Bruyne in the second half, hit the woodwork three times, but was outplayed for large portions of the match by its host at the Juventus Stadium.
Early chances for Berardi and Giacomo Raspadori were dealt with by the Belgian defense before Alexis Saelemaekers slammed a shot against the Italian crossbar in the 28th minute. But immediately after the break, the Belgians fell behind to Barella’s snap effort, cleanly hit after a clearing header from a corner fell perfectly into his path. Michy Batshuayi then had an effort come back off the woodwork as Belgium came close to a 60th minute equalizer but fell 2-0 behind when Castagne mistimed a tackle on Chiesa to offer Italy a chance to extend its lead from the penalty spot. Berardi’s kick squeezed past Belgium goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois. Toby Alderweireld then proved an unlikely attacking threat with two efforts that brought out fine stops from Italy’s goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma before Yannick Carrasco smashed a curling shot against the Italian post in the final ten minutes. Courtois’ quick clearance set up Belgium’s goal, with De Bruyne passing to the young Club Brugge’s sensation De Ketelaere to squeeze it past Donnarumma from close range, but it came too late to offer a dramatic finish to the game. |

GAME SUMMARY Comeback goals from Karim Benzema and Kylian Mbappé gave France its maiden Nations League title after beating Spain 2-1 in the final at San Siro Stadium. As in the semifinal against Belgium, France was again forced to fight back after a brave Spanish team had taken the lead through Oyarzabal midway the second half, but they did it in style with a glorious volley by Benzema and a solo run from Mbappé, in a highly controversial decision by English referee Anthony Taylor, who adjudged that the French attacker, in a clear offside position, was enabled by the attempted clearance by Spanish defender Eric García. Although the new offside regulations contemplate the possibility of resetting an offside position when a defender “deliberately” plays the ball, Eric García attempted clearance to a Théo Hernández deep pass, with no sight whatsoever of Mbappé’s offside position behind his back, can be considered anything but “deliberate” —added to the fact that this new rule clearly benefits the transgressing attacker and punishes the defender, who is discouraged from doing his job, which is try to defend any ball near the area, unaware of player’s positions, trusting that later VAR replays will validate or invalidate possible goals. Logic and all the rest of VAR decisions clearly indicate that, once the attacker is in an offside position in the first place, all the following circumstances of the game (goals, penaltis, cards... and even attempted clearances) are automatically cancelled.
There had been doubts about Ferran Torres’ fitness, who left the semifinal with a sore foot, but he recovered to start the final. Midfielder Adrien Rabiot was absent for France after testing positive for the coronavirus. There were few chances in a cagey final in Milan, with Spain’s pressing defense keeping the French attackers at bay. Howerver, France almost took an early lead as Benzema rounded Spain goalkeeper Unai Simón and attempted to roll across for Mbappé, but the ball was cleared by César Azpilicueta. Spain went closer five minutes later as Ferran Torres threaded the ball through to Pablo Sarabia, but his fairly tame shot was an easy catch for France goalkeeper Hugo Lloris. In minute 31, a flying hand by Jules Koundé in the French area deflected a Rodri’s cross, but after a quick VAR consultation Anthony Taylor waved “play on,” as the English referee considered that the handball (which in regular European games would lead to the penalty spot) was not “deliberate” enough. Spain dominated possession in the first half but created few chances, with only one shot on target (zero shots by France).
The match burst into life shortly after the hour mark. Moments after Théo Hernández saw his effort crash off the underside of the bar and out in the 63rd minute, Mikel Oyarzabal fired Spain in front after beating Dayot Upamecano to a deep pass from Sergio Busquets and firing into the bottom right corner, but the lead lasted less than two minutes before Benzema cut in from the left and curled a sumptuous effort into the top right corner to restore parity. Then came the controversial goal by Mbappé, who beat Unai Simón coming from an offside position, but after a quick VAR consultation and an unprecedented lack of clear replays, Anthony Taylor adjudged that the goal should stand as Spain defender Eric García “deliberately” attempted to intercept the pass to the France forward when —according to Taylor’s explanations to the Spanish players’ complaints— he should have remained motionless and let VAR lottery decide later on about Mbappé’s position. Hugo Lloris pulled off two great saves from point-blank range to deny first Oyarzabal and then Yéremi Pino as France survived a late siege by Spain. |
