GAME SUMMARY

The opening game of the World Cup was disappointing, as everyone feared due to the altitude of the Mexican capital and the heat (most games were scheduled at noon to accommodate European television schedules). López Salgado missed a couple of chances for Mexico, but nothing else remarkable happened. In order to avoid the violent games of the previous edition, in Mexico 1970 the referees had been given strict instructions to punish hard tackles and dirty play, and this increased the number of cautions (as many as five players were booked in this game). Another novelty was the possibility of making two substitutions during the game.

GAME SUMMARY

In spite of an early leg injury of Rocha (which put him out of the tournament), Uruguay were still far too good for the Israeli amateurs. Midway the first half, Maneiro gave the lead to the South American team when he headed in a cross from Mujica which bounced in front of a hesitant Vissoker. Mujica scored the second himself, driving in the rebound when Vissoker saved from Maneiro. Although Cubilla shot against the bar, there were no more goals in this game.

GAME SUMMARY

Nicolae Dobrin, the creative Romanian midfielder, was the first victim of the weather conditions in Mexico, after a heatstroke put him out of the tournament. Romania almost took an early lead when Dembrovschi prodded the ball just wide from Dumitrache’s cross, but England also had their chance when Lee hit the bar with a header. In the second half, Ball’s cross from the right clipped Lee’s head on its way to Hurst, who turned past Sătmăreanu and shot left-footed to send the ball into the net through Adamache’s legs.

GAME SUMMARY

Bulgaria opened the score early into the game when Dermendzhiev converted a free kick (although the ball was touched in its path by a teammate). Peru missed chances through some wild shooting (especially by Gallardo) before Bulgaria made the most of another free kick by Bonev. Peru pulled one back almost immediately when one of Gallardo’s thunderbolts crashed in off the bar. Chumpitaz equalized with a ground free kick that went through the space in the wall where three Peruvian teammates were standing. Finally, Peru completed their comeback after Cubillas played a one-two with Mifflin, beat a man and shot an excellent winner. The South American team, rampant by now, had two more goals disallowed.

GAME SUMMARY

As expected, El Salvador was no rival for Belgium, who should have scored more goals under normal conditions. But the height was a key factor, and Van Himst missed easy chances in the thin air. Only little Van Moer stood out in Belgium, hammering the first goal from thirty meters and converting a cross from Semmeling for the second. The last goal came after a penalty for foul on Semmeling, which Lambert converted.

The extreme height of Toluca (2,660 m) notably affected the performance of Italy and Sweden in this game. The only goal came when Domenghini pushed a corner on the left to Facchetti, took his return and shot from outside the area. Hellström tried to cup the ball to his chest, but let it slip under his body. Riva, very active during all the game, was a constant threat for the Swedish defense.

GAME SUMMARY

An early goal from Petráš seemed to raise more questions regarding the weakness of the Brazilian defense. But Brazil had too much talent in the front line, and after Pelé missed an open goal Rivellino equalized with a powerful free kick. On the stroke of halftime, Pelé tried to score with a sudden shot from inside his own half, but the ball drifted just wide of the right-hand post. In the second half, as Czechoslovakia began to get tired, Brazil went ahead with another marvellous goal, when Gérson sent an aerial ball which dropped just over Hagara for Pelé to chest it down and shoot a volley across the keeper. Two more individual goals by Jairzinho (after some exquisite dribbling of goalkeeper and defenders) completed the Brazilian thrashing.

Although the Europeans were in complete control of the game, their shooting lacked precision and the Moroccan goalkeeper Allal was having a fine time in goal. In the second half, however, Seeler equalized following a scramble and Müller put in the rebound when Seeler’s leaping header looped onto the bar.

GAME SUMMARY

The Belgian forward line showed their quality early into the game when Kavazashvili saved a header from Van Moer, who hit the bar from the rebound. But the Soviet Union immediately went down the other end and took the lead with a long-range shot by Byshovets. In the second half, Asatiani made it 2-0 after finishing an individual play with a cross-shot. Six minutes later, Byshovets scored his second goal with another powerful drive. When Khmel’nitskij made it 4-0 with a diving header, the game was already out of reach for Belgium, who could only score a late consolation goal by Lambert. Despite the weather conditions in Mexico City, the Belgians made no substitutions in the game.

GAME SUMMARY

A very predictable goalless draw between the two group favorites after their victories in the first day. Italy and Uruguay, in the absence of their two most talented players—the Italian Rivera for disciplinary reasons (this time he wasn’t even in the substitutes’ bench) and the Uruguayan Rocha after suffering an injury in the previous game—, played a poor game that earned them the whistles of the Mexican crowd.

But after halftime the South Americans finally found the net: first it was Cubillas, who smashed a loose ball from close range, and almost immediately Challe doubled the advantage after running into the penalty area and shooting past the keeper. Cubillas scored the last goal after receiving from “Cholo” Sotil, who had beaten assorted defenders. Sotil himself had a late goal disallowed for a foul by Ramírez on Lamrani.

GAME SUMMARY

Minnows El Salvador held out almost into the second half, but a controversial referee decision avoided this. The Salvadorian players thought Kandil had blown his whistle to award them a throw-in or a free kick and they stood still, but in fact he gave the ball to Mexico, who took the kick quickly, Padilla crossed the ball and Borja missed an open goal, but Valdivia didn’t. The players from El Salvador immediately surrounded the Egyptian referee in protest for his confusing call and a clear offside position of both Borja and Valdivia, but to no avail. In the second half, with a demoralized Salvadorian team, Mexico had no problems to increase their advantage with new goals from Valdivia, Fragoso and Basaguren.

The Swedish opened the score when Selander’s cross from the right was sidefooted in by Turesson, but Israel’s spirit compensated for their shortcomings, and they equalized when Sven-Gunnar Larsson was shocked by Spiegler’s explosive long-range shot.

Libuda again (very active in this game) dribbled Nikodimov to make an easy volleyed goal for Müller, and later, in the second half, Gaganelov fouled Libuda for a penalty, which Müller converted. Seeler then made it 4-0 for Germany by meeting a low cross from Müller at the far post, and Müller completed his hat-trick by heading the ball in from a corner kick. One minute later, Kolev scored a late consolation goal after meeting a Bonev cross.

Although El Salvador did their best to stop the Soviet attacks, early into the second half Byshovets opened the score after receiving a through-pass from Serebrjanikov. The 2-0 came after Muntjan beat three men and the ball came again to Byshovets, who shot into the net. Many were disappointed that legendary goalkeeper Yashin, already 40, didn’t have a chance to play some minutes in this game. For El Salvador, it was the end of their first participation in a World Cup, and they left without scoring a single goal (something that Rodríguez could have avoided if he had converted a golden chance).

GAME SUMMARY

There was a breath of scandal before the match, a rumor that the original referee, the Brazilian De Moraes, had asked for money to favor Uruguay. FIFA investigated the case and decided it was only a rumor… but just in case, they switched the referee to the Italy-Israel match and announced, two hours before the game Sweden-Uruguay, the appointment of North American Henry Landauer to replace De Moraes. The Uruguayan team, still piqued for the events four years earlier in England, saw a new complot of FIFA (and particularly its president, Stanley Rous) against South American football, and threatened to abandon the game, although they finally decided to play it (under protest).

Sweden needed to win this game by two goals to qualify and Uruguay were more than happy to defend the initial score, although they had an early scare when Eriksson’s first-minute shot hit the post. During the game, Mazurkiewicz made some good saves to deny Sweden. Eventually, too late, Grahn headed in a cross by Persson.

GAME SUMMARY

The final score doesn’t show Brazil’s superiority in this game, in spite of the fact that they were already qualified before the match. Pelé slashed a free kick low round the wall for the first Brazilian goal, and then Jairzinho doubled the count when he netted the ball at the near post after Paulo César “Caju” beat Sătmăreanu. Dumitrache pulled one back before halftime after dribbling past two defenders and shooting across Félix, but Pelé again scored for Brazil in the second half. A late header by Dembrovschi was not enough for Romania.

GAME SUMMARY

The German danger in this game came from the wings, and “Torpedo” Müller added the finishing touch wit a hat-trick. One high cross from Libuda, deep on the right, floated over a defender’s head for Müller to chest the ball down and push home. Then Löhr beat González on the left and his low center to the near post was knocked in by Müller’s left foot. Finally, Seeler’s cross from the right was put in again by Müller with a cleverly placed looping header. Just before halftime, Cubillas scored the only Peruvian goal with a deflected free kick.

GAME SUMMARY

Another controversial referee decision awarded a penalty shot to hosts Mexico when Valdivia, in minute 14, fell in the area after an apparently innocuous clearance by Jeck. The Belgian players mobbed the Argentinian Coerezza, but his decision stood and, two minutes after the penalty call, Peña converted from the spot. Valdivia then hit a post in minute 22, but that’s as much as this game offered. The rest of the match was slow and conservative play, with Mexico defending their advantage and Belgium (constantly whistled by the local fans) unable to create any meaningful chance. At the end of ninety minutes, Mexico had qualified for the World Cup quarterfinals for the first time.

GAME SUMMARY

Italy just needed a draw to qualify, and that’s what they got, in spite of some good opportunities to score, like a header goal disallowed, a penalty appeal turned down, or a fierce left-footer by De Sisti which hit the post. Rivera finally came into the game as a substitute in the second half, but he wasn’t as decisive as he normally was in AC Milan. In the end, incredibly enough, the Italians qualified as group winners after scoring a single goal in three games.

GAME SUMMARY

Against a Czech team already eliminated, England played an excessively cautious game. After an uneventful first half, the Pross opened the score three minutes into the second half thanks to a controversial penalty call when Kuna fell on the ball with his hand. Clarke scored from the spot on his international debut, but England continued being troubled by the Czech, and ten minutes from time Dobiáš could have equalized, but his long-range shot was deflected by Banks against the crossbar.

In a game between two teams with no chance to qualify for the next stage, Bulgaria stroke first through a free kick by Zhechev (curiously, all the Bulgarian goals in the tournament but one came from a free kick). In the second half, Mouhoub equalized with a soft touch, and Morocco became the first African team to avoid defeat in the final stage of a World Cup.

GAME SUMMARY

In a very rough match (as many as seventy fouls), Uruguay proved more resilient than the USSR, although their victory came after a controversial goal in extra-time: When Ancheta sent a header toward the Soviet goal line on the left, Shesternjov shielded it with his body, but Gómez stole it between his legs from behind and sent a near-post cross which beat Kavazashvili and was headed in by Espárrago. The Soviet players immediately surrounded the referee claiming that the ball went out of play before the center (but TV replays show conclusively that the ball went only partially beyond the line, not completely as stated in FIFA regulations, and therefore it wasn't off bounds).

GAME SUMMARY

Mexico opened the score early into the game when Fragoso coolly flicked the ball sideways to his right, where González sliced it past Albertosi. The Mexican euphoria didn’t last long though, because Italy were soon in control of the game, and equalized when a low drive from Domenghini was deflected into his own net by Guzmán. At halftime, Valcareggi sent Rivera into the game, and his partnership with Riva unleashed the Italian attack at last. The latter put Italy ahead with a strike with his famous left foot, and two more goals by Rivera and Riva secured qualification for semifinals.

GAME SUMMARY

Brazil showed their attaching intentions early into the game, when Pelé hit a post. Later, though, he crossed from the right, Campos slipped and chested the ball straight to Tostão, who immediately pushed it to Rivellino, whose shot went in off the bottom of the far post. Next Tostão took a short corner on the left, ran round a defender to get to the goal line, and hit Rivellino’s return pass straight at the near post for the second goal. Peru didn’t give up and Gallardo, tall and powerful, beat Carlos Alberto down the left and sent the ball in past Félix. But in this game the attacks clearly overcame the defenses, and three more goals in the second half made it 4-2 for Brazil: six minutes after the restart, Tostão picked up a deflected ball from Rubiños to score the third Brazilian goal, then Cubillas pulled one back for Peru with a ground shot from outside the area. With fifteen minutes to go, Jairzinho made it 4-2 after beating an onrushing Rubiños.

GAME SUMMARY

The English goalkeeper Gordon Banks was not eligible to play this match due to food poisoning (Moctezuma’s Revenge) and was replaced by Peter Bonetti. During the first hour, England dominated completely the game, and went ahead 2-0. The first goal was started and finished by Mullery in an impressive way: after exchanging passes with Lee, he found Newton overlapping on the right, ran for the return at the near post and scooped it high past Maier. Early in the second half, Newton put in another cross to the far post, where Peters forced the ball in off Maier’s dive.

But the Germans demonstrated their resilience from that moment on. Libuda, neutralized by Cooper, was substituted by a fresh and dangerous Grabowski, and Germany started to create chances from the right wing. In one of them, Beckenbauer beat Mullery on the right-hand corner and shot immediately; the ball seemed to surprise Bonetti for pace and went in under his body. Seeler converted the equalizer with some luck, thanks to a back-header that was aimed at Müller but drifted over the goalkeeper. In extra-time, Grabowski went past a tired Cooper to the goal line, his high cross was headed back from beyond the far post by Löhr, and Müller at last came to life by getting behind Labone to volley home while in mid-air. England could have scored a late equalizer, but Hurst’s goal was disallowed by the referee.

GAME SUMMARY

Brazil, whose scars from the 1950 final against Uruguay were still fresh, re-lived their worst memories when Cubilla scored after a defensive mistake by Brito. Although the Brazilians struggled for the rest of the first period, the equalizer didn’t come until just before halftime, when Clodoaldo knocked a short ball to Tostão on the left wing, sprinted for the return pass and thrashed it past Mazurkiewicz’s right hand. Brazil went ahead midway the second half, thanks to a low cross-shot by Jairzinho, and secured their pass to the final near the end, when Pelé rolled the ball back for Rivellino’s left foot to do the rest.

GAME SUMMARY

In one of the greatest games in the history of the World Cup, Italy qualified for the final after an amazing extra-time, in which five goals were scored. The Italians took the lead early into the game, when Boninsegna netted a rebound from the edge of the area. As usual, the team coached by Valcareggi held on to this advantage and survived the German attacks (especially when Overath hit the bar with a mighty left-footer and Albertosi recovered to kick clear from Müller after his attempted clearance hit Grabowski and rebounded as far as the goal line). The equalizer came in injury time, after Grabowski held off two tackles on the left and crossed for Schnellinger to arrive unmarked and leap at the ball with feet splayed, volleying in with his right.

Italy’s downhill spiral continued in extra-time, when Poletti ran back toward his own goal and chested the ball in the direction of Albertosi, where Müller touched it just over the line to make it 2-1 for Germany. But the game never stopped swinging both ways in this prodigious overtime: Rivera sent a long free kick to the German area, the ball bounced off Held straight to Burgnich, and the Italian defender banged it in with his left foot for the equalizer. Near the end of the first half of extra-time, Riva beat Schnellinger and scored with a confident low cross-shot. However, the game was not over yet: Müller made it 3-3 with a header after a corner, and Rivera scored the winner straight from the kick-off, after sidefooting a low cross from Boninsegna into the middle of the German goal. This time, Italy held out till the end and qualified for the final.

GAME SUMMARY

For the first time in the competition, “Torpedo” Müller failed to score and couldn’t equal the 13 goals record of Just Fontaine in 1958 (although this didn’t prevent the German player from becoming the tournament’s top scorer with 10 goals). Uruguay, freed from competition tensions, finally came out to attack, but were unlucky not to score. The only goal was converted by Overath midway the first half with a low shot after Müller laid the ball back. Although Seeler hit the bar, Uruguay had enough chances to equalize and even win the consolation final. In the last minutes of the game, Wolter made a tremendous save from Ancheta’s header.

GAME SUMMARY

Italy had the first clear chance of the game, when Riva took Mazzola’s inside pass on the right wing and his long-range shot was tipped over the bar by Félix. But the natural attitude of Italy in the tournament was defensive, whereas for Brazil it was offensive, and soon the game started to move in one single direction: the goal defended by Albertosi. From a throw-in on the left, Rivellino hooked over a volleyed cross, Pelé beat Burgnich easily in the air and headed down and in at the far post. However, another defensive mistake of Brazil allowed Italy to come back when Clodoaldo attempted a lazy backheel, Boninsegna intercepted the ball, held off Brito’s challenge and turned the ball into an empty net. However, the Brazilian menace was always there: Pelé had a goal disallowed only because the referee had blown for halftime and Rivellino thrashed a free kick against the bar.

Brazil’s second goal finally arrived midway the second half, when Jairzinho was tackled by Facchetti and the ball went straight to Gérson, who stepped away from a challenge and scored with a crisp cross-shot just before another tackle came in, the ball beating Albertosi to his left. Within minutes, Gérson (who for some reason was not man-marked by Italy) hit another of his tremendous long crosses deep to the right-hand side of the Italian penalty area where Pelé, although marked by Burgnich, headed across goal to Jairzinho, and the Brazilian winger made it 3-1 with a close-range miskick.

This time Rivera didn’t come on at halftime as usual to improve the Italian attack, mainly because Mazzola was playing too well, and when he did it, with only six minutes to go, it was already too late to help his team. Brazil wrapped it up with a late, celebratory goal which showed all the Brazilian skills: Clodoaldo held off several Italian players deep in his half before feeding Jairzinho on the left; the Brazilian winger rushed inside but again Facchetti wouldn’t let him pass, so he sent the ball to Pelé who, after some square passes, assisted a running Carlos Alberto on the right, whose shot went past Albertosi’s right hand.
