The points assigned to each country at the end of a season is the average of the points earned by all its teams during that season. Teams receive 2 points per win and 1 point per draw (in addition, 1 bonus point is given after reaching the rounds of 1/4 Final, Semifinal, and Final). The sum of five consecutive seasons represents the UEFA Country Ranking at the end of that period. This ranking determines the number of berths assigned to each country in UEFA Cup (C3) corresponding to the second season after the one that closes the 5-year period, so that all the countries know at the beginning of their domestic championships how many berths in C3 they have for the next season.
*Note1: The numbers of berths assigned by UEFA Country Ranking may undergo further modifications in the case of some countries, depending on different circumstances (see Participant Teams in Eurocups 1999-2000). The new states joining UEFA after the last season of this 5-year period are not included in the ranking.
*Note2: The reason for the apparent irregularity in berth distribution in the case of C3 is that top-ranked countries enter more teams in C1. After the disappearance of C2 in 1999, all the domestic Cup winners participate in UEFA Cup.
