Intercontinental Cup 1968

[Note: From this edition on, the goal difference in the two-legged final will decide the winner (instead of the number of points, as before). In case of a tie in the goal difference, a tie-break will be played at a neutral venue (for the 1968 edition, the chosen city was Amsterdam).]

FIRST LEG

STADIUM: Camilo Cichero / La Bombonera (Buenos Aires)

DATE: 25-09-1968 (21:00 h)

ATTENDANCE: 66.000

REFEREE: Hugo Sosa Miranda (PAR)

GOALS: 1-0 (Conigliaro 27')

[Incidents: Although the referee officially credited Conigliaro with the Argentinian goal, it was in fact Togneri who headed home a corner kick from Ribaudo. Stiles was sent off (min. 79).]

SECOND LEG

STADIUM: Old Trafford (Manchester)

DATE: 16-10-1968 (19:45 h)

ATTENDANCE: 63.428

REFEREE: Konstantin Zečević (YUG)

GOALS: 0-1 (Verón 6'); 1-1 (Morgan 90')

[Incidents: Law was injured in minute 34, and four minutes later he was forced to leave the game, being finally substituted by Sartori in minute 44. Best and Medina were both sent off (min. 89) after a mutual brawl. Kidd scored a winning goal for Manchester United in injury time (which should have taken the final into a tie-break to be played in Amsterdam), but the referee disallowed it claiming that he had whistled the end of the game before the action, and therefore the Argentinian goalkeeper and defenders didn't move to try to prevent this goal.]
