UEFA Cup 1978-79

(From 5-09-1978 to 23-05-1979)

 

 

COMPETITION SYSTEM

·          64 teams (best qualified clubs in domestic leagues) playing knock-out rounds on a home and away basis. The aggregate score of both games decides the winner.

·          Ties are resolved with: 1) the “away goals double value” rule; 2) a 30 minutes extra-time after regulation; 3) a penalty shoot-out (pk).

·          The final is played on a home and away basis.

RESUMEN DEL PARTIDO—IDA (GAME SUMMARY—FIRST LEG)

Con empate a uno concluyó el partido de ida de la final de la Copa de la UEFA. El excelente sistema defensivo del Borussia, con marcajes al hombre, impidió a los delanteros locales llegar con facilidad a la meta defendida por Kneib. Además, pese a que casi todo el juego (sobre todo en la primera parte) se desarrolló en terreno alemán, los contragolpes borussers llevaban siempre peligro, especialmente cuando pasaban por las botas del danés Simonsen (nuevo fichaje del FC Barcelona). El gol del Estrella Roja llegó en el minuto 21, cuando Šestić remató un centro medido de Muslin. Tras el tanto, los de Belgrado siguieron acosando la meta alemana, y en el minuto 29 gozaron de una oportunidad de oro para ampliar su ventaja, cuando Savić conectó un perfecto cabezazo que salió rozando el poste. El empate llegó en el minuto 60, al introducir Jurišić el balón en su propia portería en su intento por despejar un centro de Wohlers. Incluso pudo haber ganado el partido el Borussia en el minuto 75 cuando Lienen robó un balón a Miletović y se plantó ante Stojanović, pero el portero yugoslavo detuvo su disparo. Los últimos minutos fueron de acoso local, pero la organizada defensa del Borussia contuvo los ataques desesperados del Estrella Roja.

RESUMEN DEL PARTIDO—VUELTA (GAME SUMMARY—SECOND LEG)

El Borussia Mönchengladbach se proclamó justo vencedor de la final de la Copa de la UEFA al derrotar en el partido de vuelta al Estrella Roja por 1-0, aunque mereció marcar más goles. Ambos equipos mostraron una férrea defensa que hizo que apenas hubiera ocasiones claras de gol. Los yugoslavos, grandes maestros en el control del balón, mostraron una ligera superioridad técnica sobre sus rivales, aunque los alemanes les superaron en el juego sin balón. En este aspecto radicó la clave de la victoria del Borussia, en el juego rápido y de desmarque. El equipo local dominó durante toda la primera mitad y fruto de ese dominio fue el gol marcado por Simonsen de penalti a los dieciocho minutos, tras una jugada del propio delantero danés en la que fue derribado dentro del área yugoslava por Jurišić. En la segunda mitad apretó más el Estrella Roja, con un pressing constante en el medio campo alemán, aunque su dominio no cristalizó en ocasiones claras de gol por su excesivo manejo de balón y por las prisas que comenzaban a embargar a sus jugadores.
