Champions League 1997-98

(From 23-07-1997 to 20-05-1998)

COMPETITION SYSTEM

·          55 teams (title holder plus champions and different runners-up in domestic leagues) play two Qualifying Rounds on a home and away basis.  The aggregate score of both games decides the winner.  Ties are resolved with: 1) the “away goals double value” rule; 2) a 30 minutes extra time after regulation; 3) a penalty shoot-out (pk).

·          The 24 surviving teams participate in a league stage: 6 groups of 4 teams each playing a round robin (3 points per victory, 1 point per draw).  All 6 winners and the 2 best runners-up of these groups qualify for a knock-out round of quarterfinals and further semifinals.  The criteria to determine the final classification within the Champions League groups are (in this order): 1) total points earned; 2) points earned in individual matches; 3) goal average in individual matches; 4) away goals in individual matches; 5) total goal average; 6) total away goals; 7) UEFA Country Ranking at the beginning of the season. The criteria to determine the 2 best runners-up are (in this order): 1) points earned; 2) goal average; 3) goals made; 4) away goals; 5) UEFA Country Ranking at the beginning of the season; 6) UEFA Team Ranking at the beginning of the season.

·          A final game is played at a predetermined venue.

BYES: BV Borussia 09 (GER) [title holder]; Juventus FC (ITA), Real Madrid CF (SPA), AS Monaco (FRA), FC Bayern München (GER), PSV (Eindhoven) (NED), FC Porto (POR), Manchester United FC (ENG).

º NOTE: Although the Turkish champion (Galatasaray SK) should have received a wild card to access the league stage —since this country is ranked 8 in UEFA country ranking— it was degraded to this round to allow for Germany's two berths in the group stage (domestic champion FC Bayern München plus Champions League title holder BV Borussia 09).  As an indirect result of this, the Swiss champion (FC Sion), ranked 17 in UEFA classification, is degraded from Second Qualifying Round to First Qualifying Round.

(a) The original game was abandoned after 67 minutes (with MTK-Hungária FC leading 3-2) due to a floodlight failure in the stadium, and it was replayed on the next day.

(b) The original game ended 3-2 for CSA Steaua Bucureşti.  Later, UEFA decided a 3-0 w.o. for the Romanian team, since Paris Saint-Germain FC fielded an ineligible player (Fournier).  This forfeit also specifies that, in case of a final tie (i.e., a 3-0 victory for the French team in the second leg), an extra time won't be necessary and the Romanian team would qualify for the next round.

(c) Played in Lárnax.
