Champions League 1995-96

(From 9-08-1995 to 22-05-1996)

COMPETITION SYSTEM

·          24 teams (domestic champions plus title holder) play a Qualifying Round on a home and away basis.  The aggregate score of both games decides the winner.  Ties are resolved with: 1) the “away goals double value” rule; 2) a 30 minutes extra time after regulation; 3) a penalty shoot-out (pk).

·          The 16 surviving teams participate in a league stage: 4 groups of 4 teams each playing a round robin (3 points per victory, 1 point per draw).  The winners and runners-up of these groups qualify for a knock-out round of quarterfinals (firsts against seconds) and further semifinals.

·          A final game is played at a predetermined venue.

* The Ukrainian team FK Dynamo, participant in Champions League, was disqualified by UEFA after its first game in the league stage (1-0 victory against Panathinaïkós AO in Kyïv) when the Spanish referee Antonio Jesús López Nieto reported a bribe attempt (including minks and feminine escort). To replace FK Dynamo in this group stage, UEFA promoted its Qualifying Round rivals, AaB (Ålborg). Later, UEFA excluded FK Dynamo for three years (including season 1995-96) from all European competitions. This ban was lifted on April 19, 1996 (the official UEFA explanation being that it was to avoid hindering the development of Ukrainian football).
