COMPETITION SYSTEM

· 33 teams (domestic champions plus title holder) playing knock-out rounds on a home and away basis. The aggregate score of both games decides the winner.

· To decide a tie, the “away goals double value” rule is applied. If this rule cannot be applied and the tie still holds after regulation, an extra time will be played. Ultimate ties are resolved with a third game. [Note: Experimentally, only for the first rounds of the competition before 1/4 Finals, ties after regulation and extra time are decided on a penalty shoot-out (pk): the best scorer after five penalty shots wins; should the tie hold after this, the first team to miss a shot is eliminated (the rival not doing it also).]

· A final game is played at a predetermined venue.

[Note: As a novelty in European competitions, white and red cards are introduced to penalize foul play (white cards later became yellow cards).]

RESUMEN DEL PARTIDO (GAME SUMMARY)

El AFC Ajax ha conquistado con justicia, aunque con un juego conservador y sin brillo, la XVI Copa de Europa, y se ha convertido en el segundo equipo holandés que logra tan preciado galardón. Su rival en la final, el equipo griego del Panathinaïkós AO, luchó durante todo el partido, pero careció de remate (algo paradójico en un equipo entrenado por Ferenc Puskás, uno de los mejores rematadores de todos los tiempos).

Los dos entrenadores jugaron sus bazas intentando despistar al rival. Puskás se ha limitado a colocar a su teórico extremo izquierdo, Kapsis, como defensa central, y alinear a tres delanteros. Por su parte, Michels ha sacado a Neeskens de defensa lateral derecho y ha colocado al habitual en esta demarcación, Suurbier, en el lateral izquierdo para cubrir la baja de Krol. En el centro de la zaga, Vasović y Hulshoff jugaban de líbero y stopper, respectivamente. El tempranero gol del Ajax, logrado por Van Dijk al rematar de cabeza un centro de Keizer, obligó al equipo griego a llevar la iniciativa en el juego, con un dominio del centro del campo que sin embargo no se traducía en ocasiones, pese a sus rápidas combinaciones y las veloces escapadas de Domazos. Por contra, el Ajax buscaba el contragolpe con pases largos al hueco que creaban un mayor peligro. La ventaja de los holandeses en el marcador se habría podido ampliar de no ser por la falta de puntería rematadora de Keizer o el excesivo preciosismo de Cruijff. Van Dijk era el jugador ajacied que creaba más peligro en el primer periodo en veloces escapadas hacia el marco griego, aunque Ikonomopoulos aparecía siempre rapidísimo para cortar sus avances.

En la segunda mitad se esperaba que el Ajax resolviese el partido a su favor por su mejor forma física y capacidad rematadora. Pero, contrariamente a lo que se imaginaba, los griegos han estado mucho mejor físicamente. Además, los cambios que introdujo Michels en su equipo (Blankenburg y Haan por los centrocampistas Rijnders y Swart, respectivamente) tenían un marcado carácter defensivo. Durante todo este periodo, el Ajax se limitó a defender su solitario gol dejando en punta únicamente a Cruijff. Van Dijk y Gerrie Mühren, que en el primer tiempo se habían incorporado con frecuencia al ataque, realizaron un trabajo de contención en el centro del campo. De esta manera han transcurrido los segundos cuarenta y cinco minutos, con un dominio infructuoso del Panathinaïkós que casi siempre moría en la maraña defensiva holandesa y un Ajax que se limitaba a lanzar esporádicos contragolpes. La sentencia definitiva llegó a falta de tres minutos para la conclusión, en una jugada individual de Cruijff que conduce el balón desde el medio campo griego y, tras rebasar a dos defensas, cede en profundidad a Haan, que venía siguiendo la jugada a su derecha. El disparo a media altura de éste es rechazado con tan mala fortuna por Kapsis que el balón sale rebotado y descoloca completamente a Ikonomopoulos quien, ya desde el suelo, no puede hacer nada por detener su trayectoria hacia el gol.
