COMPETITION SYSTEM

·          78 teams (title holder plus champions and different runners-up in domestic leagues) play five qualifying rounds on a home-and-away basis (except the Preliminary Round, played as a knock-out tournament at a single venue). Ties are resolved with: 1) a 30 minutes extra-time after regulation; 2) a penalty shoot-out (pk).

·          The access of participants in the different qualifying rounds depends on their country's classification in UCR (UEFA Country Ranking), so that top “seeded” teams are bye from the first rounds. The last three stages (Second Qualifying Round, Third Qualifying Round and Qualification Play-Off) are divided into two separate groups: one for domestic League wiiners (Champions Route) and the other for non-champions (League Route). The title holder and other teams from top ranked federations are bye from these qualifying rounds.

·          The 32 surviving teams after the previous knock-out rounds participate in a League Stage, divided in 8 groups of 4 teams each playing a round robin (3 points per victory, 1 point per draw). The champions and runners-up of these groups qualify for a Round of 16, with winners advancing further to quarterfinals and semifinals. The criteria to determine the final classification within the Champions League groups are (in this order): 1) total points earned; 2) points earned in individual matches; 3) goal average in individual matches; 4) away goals in individual matches; 5) total goal average; 6) total away goals; 7) UEFA Country Ranking at the beginning of the season.

·          A final game is played at a predetermined venue.

RESUMEN DEL PARTIDO (GAME SUMMARY)

 

El Manchester City de Pep Guardiola completó una temporada perfecta en juego y resultados al conquistar por primera vez en su historia la Liga de Campeones, tras coronarse en las semanas previas campeón de la Premier League y la FA Cup. Pese a que todas las apuestas daban como claro favorito al conjunto cityzen, el Inter de Milán puso las cosas muy difíciles al conjunto sky blue, que con mucho sufrimiento y un gol del español Rodri completó su triplete de títulos en 2023. El equipo de Simone Inzaghi planteó un duelo muy duro con una presión intensa que dificultó el habitual juego dominante de los de Guardiola, que no realizaron un encuentro brillante pero tuvieron la suerte de los campeones al anotar el gol de la victoria en una de sus escasas llegadas con peligro a la meta interista y sobrevivir a varias ocasiones claras del Inter que se produjeron a continuación, desbaratadas entre el larguero, Ederson… y Romelu Lukaku. El potente delantero belga confirmó su fama de gafe de cara a la portería rival (tanto con Bélgica como con el Inter), ya que no sólo malogró una ocasión clarísima a bocajarro, sino que incluso desvió un remate de cabeza de su compañero Dimarco que se colaba en la portería del City.

 

El conjunto inglés, con Aké por el lastimado Walker como única novedad en su once base, jugaba su segunda final en tres años con la intención de olvidar sus decepciones europeas de los últimos años. El Inter, por su parte, volvía a una final de la máxima competición europea después de trece años. El City, fiel a su costumbre, se hizo dueño del balón desde los primeros minutos, aunque la agresividad y la presión del Inter impedían las rápidas circulaciones del campeón inglés, excesivamente calculador y paciente en ataque. No afinaban los de Guardiola y se estiraban bien los de Inzaghi por las bandas, con un Dimarco más profundo que Dumfries. Jugaba el Inter como sabe, muy organizado y seguro con y sin balón, repleto de jugadores expertos, mientras que al City le costaba atacar, excesivamente responsabilizado, más comprimido que liberado, reiterativo con los pases de seguridad y sin jugadas de riesgo que subrayar. Stones, un central, se había convertido en la mejor baza ofensiva de los de Guardiola como interior. Hasta que fue exigido en un escorzo por Haaland en el minuto 27, Onana era prácticamente un espectador más, mientras que Ederson se mostraba dubitativo ante la presión interista. El partido del City se parecía cada vez más al de hace dos años en Oporto ante el Chelsea. La tirantez era máxima y el temor al error se imponía a la búsqueda del acierto. Únicamente las arrancadas de Haaland desatascaban el encorsetado juego ofensivo cityzen, aunque la lesión de De Bruyne a la media hora y su posterior retirada hizo que el conjunto inglés perdiera verticalidad. La final, al descanso, estaba donde el Inter quería y donde muy pocos habían pronosticado.

 

La segunda parte comenzó con el mismo tono con el que acabó la primera, con un Inter que se crecía por momentos y comenzaba a creer en la victoria y un City muy pobre en ataque y previsible en sus movimientos. El pronóstico de una final fácil para los ingleses empezaba a temblar. Ya con Lukaku en el campo por el lesionado Džeko, Lautaro Martínez tuvo el gol en sus pies después de ser habilitado por Bernardo Silva y Akanji, pero su disparo fue desviado por un creciente Ederson. No perdonó, en cambio, poco después Rodri, que abrió el marcador con un disparo ajustado tras un centro de Bernardo Silva que provocó una montonera en el área interista. El gol espoleó al Inter, y acto seguido Dimarco remató consecutivamente al larguero y contra el cuerpo de Lukaku. Con el partido definitivamente abierto, el Inter se volcó sobre la meta de Ederson —los interistas acabaron con más disparos a puerta (14) que su rival (7)— y el City pudo sentenciar al contragolpe en dos llegadas del veloz Foden, que se empequeñeció ante el felino Onana. Y a todo esto el City seguía sin contar con la amenaza ofensiva de Haaland, muy fuera del partido. Pese a su excelente temporada y sus impresionantes cifras goleadoras, la nula aportación del delantero noruego en los partidos importantes del City —final de la FA Cup, semifinales de Liga de Campeones frente al Real Madrid y ahora en la final de Estambul— suponen un importante hándicap en su lucha por el Balón de Oro. El Inter no se rindió y tuvo el empate en el minuto 88, pero Lukaku, completamente solo ante Ederson, tiró al “muñeco” y el portero brasileño del City se la encontró sobre la línea de gol. En el último balón, con el cronómetro a cero, Ederson le sacó otro cabezazo a Gosens. En esa jugada murieron las esperanzas del Inter, un equipo italiano que hizo una buena final, inteligente, pero que tuvo que claudicar anter el mejor equipo europeo de la temporada.
