IV Olympic Basketball Tournament (Melbourne 1956)

(From 22-11-1956 to 1-12-1956)

* NOTE: An original clear-cut format with 16 teams proposed by FIBA, including berth assignments for the World Championship, European Championship and Olympic Games, was finally abandoned due to the many withdrawals of teams who refused to make the long journey to Australia in mid-season, and also because of political discrepancies between Communist and non-Communist countries after the Soviet invasion of Hungary just three weeks before the Games.

PARTICIPANTS (15)

· Host nation: Australia.

· 14 teams of national federations associated to FIBA, under free registration, from three continents: EUROPE (Bulgaria, France, Soviet Union), AMERICA (Brazil, Canada, Chile, Uruguay, USA), ASIA (Formosa, Japan, Korea, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand).

COMPETITION SYSTEM

· The fifteen participating teams are divided in 4 groups (three with four teams each and one with three) playing a round robin. In case that two or more teams finish level on points, their position is decided by their basket average.

· The group winners and runners-up advance to a classification round for places 1-8 (played also as a league stage with 2 groups of four teams each), whereas the teams finishing in third and fourth position enter a classification round for places 9-15 (also divided in 2 groups).

· The group winners and runners-up after the classification round for places 1-8 advance to the semifinal round (played as an X-pairing). The two winners after the semifinals qualify for the final, whereas the two losers play a consolation final for the bronze medal.
