PARTICIPANTS (23)

· Host nation: Great Britain.

· 22 teams of national federations associated to FIBA, under free registration, from three continents: EUROPE (Belgium, Czechoslovakia, France, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Switzerland), AMERICA (Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Cuba, Mexico, Peru, Uruguay, USA), ASIA (China, Egypt, Iran, Iraq, Korea, Philippines).

COMPETITION SYSTEM

· The twenty-three participating teams are divided in 4 groups (three with six teams each and one with five) playing a round robin. In case that two or more teams finish level on points, their position is decided by their basket average.

· The group winners and runners-up advance to a classification round for places 1-8, played as an X-pairing 1/4 round, whereas the rest of teams enter additional classification rounds for places 9-16 and 17-23 (with the same system).

· The four winners after the 1/4 round for places 1-8 advance to semifinals. The two winners after this last knock-out round qualify for the final, whereas the two losers play a consolation final for the bronze medal.
