PARTICIPANTS (24)

· Host nation: Spain.

· Title holder: Soviet Union.

· Six teams from a European Qualifying Tournament: Italy, FRG, Yugoslavia, Netherlands, Greece, Israel.

· Top 3 qualified teams in the South American Championship: Brazil, Uruguay, Argentina.

· Top 3 qualified teams in the Centrobasket: Puerto Rico, Panama, Cuba.

· Top 3 qualified teams in the Asian Championship: South Korea, China, Malaysia (ranked 4th in the 1985 FIBA Asia Championship, which took the place of winner Philippines after the latter’s refusal to participate in the World Championship).

· Top 2 qualified teams in the African Championship: Ivory Coast, Angola.

· Oceania Championship winner: Australia.

· Two top teams from North America: USA, Canada.

· Two teams invited by the Organizing Committee: France, New Zealand (took the place of Czechoslovakia after the latter refused the invitation to the World Championship).

 

COMPETITION SYSTEM

· In a Preliminary Round, the twenty-four participating teams are divided in 4 groups of 6 teams each playing a round robin. In case that two or more teams finish level on points, their position is decided by their particular basket average.

· The top three teams from each group advance to the Semifinal Round, divided in 2 groups of 6 teams each playing a round robin. The individual scores during the Preliminary Round are accumulated in this stage. In case that two or more teams finish level on points, their position is decided by their particular basket average.

· The group winners and runners-up after the Semifinal Round advance to the Final Round for places 1-4 (played as an X-pairing). The two winners of these semifinal matches qualify for the final, whereas the two losers play a consolation final for the bronze medal.
