XXXVII EUROPEAN CHAMPIONSHIP (KAUNAS 2011)

QUALIFYING STAGE

(From 2-08-2010 to 24-08-2011)

COMPETITION SYSTEM

· All the participating national squads are grouped in two divisions: Division A (with teams playing different rounds in order to qualify for the Final Stage of the European Championship) and Division B (including teams that compete in order to be promoted to Division A for the next edition of the tournament).

· In Division A, the top four teams in each group after the Qualifying Round, together with 10 bye teams, advance to the Final Stage in Lithuania (held in Kaunas and sub-venues), whereas the group bottom teams enter an Additional Qualifying Round (AQR) in order to earn two more berths.

· In Division B, the group winners and the best runner-up after the Qualifying Round advance to the Promotion Games (played as a match-up) in order to earn the two promotion berths into Division A.

PROMOTION GAMES

(The winners will be promoted to Division A)

*NOTE: While the Qualifying Stage was going on, FIBA decided to extend the Final Stage of Eurobasket from 16 to 24 teams and to merge Division A and Division B in a single pan-continental group for the next edition of the tournament, so the scheduled Promotion Games were cancelled.
