VII EUROPEAN CHAMPIONSHIP (PARIS 1951)

(From 3-05-1951 to 12-05-1951)

COMPETITION SYSTEM

· The eighteen participating teams are divided in 4 groups (two with five teams and two with four teams each) playing a round robin. In case that two or more teams finish level on points, their position is decided by their basket average.

· The group winners and runners-up advance to a classification round for places 1-8 (played also as a league stage with 2 groups of four teams each), whereas the teams finishing in third and fourth position enter a classification round for places 9-16 (also divided in 2 groups). The last two teams in groups A and B after the preliminary round finish their participation in the tournament at the bottom position.

· The group winners and runners-up after the classification round for places 1-8 advance to the semifinal round (played as an X-pairing). The two winners after the semifinals qualify for the final, whereas the two losers play a consolation final for the bronze medal.

FINAL

VENUE: Vélodrome d’Hiver (Paris)

DATE: 12-05-1951 (22:00 h)

ATTENDANCE: 12.000

REFEREES: İzzettin Somer (TUR), xxx (XXX)

FOULED OUT (FOUR FOULS): Korkia / Matoušek

[Incidents: With one second on the clock and the game tied (44-44), Stepas Butautas was fouled. The French crowd, who overtly supported the Czechs, did their best to put Butautas off, but the Soviet star held his nerve and made the game winning free throw. However, confusion reigned in the aftermath as one referee claimed the free throw invalid due to the fact that Butautas had stepped on the line, while the second referee indicated that the shot should stand. The Soviets complained and, after 20 minutes of discussion, the basket was declared valid and victory awarded to the Soviet Union. Both the crowd and the Czech team expressed their unhappiness with the call and the referees ran to the safety of the dressing-room. The medal ceremony was later marred by the continued jeering from the French fans.]
