RESUMEN (SUMMARY) El potente cuadro ruso del Khimki ha dejado prácticamente sentenciado el título de la Eurocopa tras derrotar abultadamente al Gran Canaria por 91 a 66 en el partido de ida de la final. En todo un clásico de esta competición ―quinta final consecutiva de la Eurocopa que enfrenta a un equipo español con otro ruso―, el conjunto dirigido por Rimas Kurtinaitis se mostró intratable en todo momento y cimentó su victoria en un juego coral en el que, a nivel individual, destacaron Vjal’tsev y Koponen (ambos con 18 puntos). Un espectacular parcial de 1-16 al comienzo del último cuarto sirvió para que el conjunto ruso encarrilara el partido de ida (y prácticamente la eliminatoria). Para el Gran Canaria, tras una excelente campaña europea (21 victorias y una única derrota), el choque supuso un duro despertar a su sueño de conquistar esta competición. Kuric (23 puntos) y Báez (18) fueron los máximos anotadores de un combinado insular que no fue capaz de igualar el acierto y la intensidad del Khimki, que exhibió un enorme potencial en el Gran Canaria Arena.
Tras una canasta inicial de Eulis Báez, Rice y Davis tiraron de talento y experiencia y el cuadro ruso tomó inmediatamente las riendas del encuentro (2-8, min. 4). Un parcial de 7-0 a favor del conjunto canario, de la mano de unos estelares Báez y Kuric, incendió el Gran Canaria Arena (9-8, min. 6). Sin embargo, el Khimki no perdió la compostura, y gracias al acierto de Davis, Vjal’tsev y Augustine los pupilos de Kurtinaitis volvieron a cobrar ventaja (16-21, min. 10), aunque el Gran Canaria pudo paliar parcialmente los daños desde la línea de tiros libres y mantener el encuentro abierto al final del primer cuarto (19-21).
Un nuevo parcial de 0-8 al comienzo del segundo periodo, de la mano de unos inspirados Koponen, Augustine y Rice, sirvió para que el cuadro ruso estableciera la máxima diferencia hasta ese momento (19-29, min. 13). Un triple de Bellas frenó la sangría, y el regreso a pista de Edy Walter, Báez y Kuric hizo que el Gran Canaria se metiera de nuevo en el partido (24-29, min. 14). Sin embargo, el conjunto español estaba haciendo constantemente la goma en una dinámica peligrosa, en la que la anotación no se producía mediante un juego fluido, sino gracias a la inspiración individual de sus jugadores con más talento. De esta forma, cuando el Khimki intensificó de nuevo su defensa, apuntaló el rebote y convirtió sus lanzamientos exteriores, los hombres de Rimas Kurtinaitis se escaparon de nuevo en el marcador (24-35, min. 15). Un “2+1” de Paulí en el último minuto permitió al Gran Canaria seguir albergando ilusiones al descanso (33-40).
Un arreón de los locales al comienzo del tercer cuarto alimentó de nuevo las ilusiones de la afición grancanaria, que vio cómo su equipo volvía a acercarse en el marcador (41-44, min. 25; 51-53, min. 28). Davis, intratable hasta ese momento en ambas zonas, tuvo que sentarse al cometer su cuarta falta personal. Sin embargo, pese a que los aficionados locales apretaron de lo lindo, el Khimki resistió la presión ambiental y el base finlandés Koponen anotó sobre la bocina para mantener la ventaja de su equipo (54-59).
El comienzo del último y definitivo cuarto significó el principio del fin para el Gran Canaria. Dos triples consecutivos de Vjal’tsev y Monja, unidos al acierto de Koponen, Augustine y Sheleketo, dinamitaron el partido tras un parcial de 1-16 (55-75, min. 34). Esta vez el Gran Canaria no pudo volver a engancharse al encuentro, y un nuevo triple de Koponen estableció una máxima diferencia de 22 puntos (58-80, min. 35). Dos triples estratosféricos del MVP del torneo, Tyrese Rice, y una nueva canasta de tres de Koponen completaron un contundente parcial de 12-32 en el último cuarto a favor del Khimki, que logró su máxima ventaja de todo el partido en el último minuto (66-91). |

RESUMEN (SUMMARY) El Khimki ruso renovó el título de la Eurocopa logrado en 2012 al derrotar también en el partido de vuelta al Gran Canaria por 83 a 64. El conjunto de la Región de Moscú, entrenado por el lituano Rimas Kurtinaitis, no dio opción a la sorpresa y dominó a sus rivales desde el pitido inicial. El ala-pívot estadounidense James Augustine fue el máximo anotador del encuentro con 18 puntos, aunque fue su compañero Tyrese Rice quien se alzó con el MVP de la final (galardón que suma al MVP de la competición logrado anteriormente). Por su parte, el Gran Canaria concluyó de manera agridulce su brillante campaña europea. Para los hombres de Aíto, los 25 puntos de desventaja del partido de ida celebrado en Gran Canaria fueron una pesada losa que sepultó todas sus esperanzas de remontada.
Lejos de especular con su amplia ventaja en el global de la eliminatoria, el Khimki salió decidido a llevar la iniciativa desde el primer minuto, y muy pronto comenzó a marcar diferencias (5-0, min. 2). El Gran Canaria consiguió mantener el control de la zona en los primeros minutos gracias a Edy Walter, que machacó en dos ocasiones el aro rival, aunque el gigante caboverdiano se cargó pronto con dos faltas personales y tuvo que irse al banquillo. Esto fue aprovechado por Kurtinaitis para poner en la cancha a Augustine, quien junto con su compatriota Paul Davis se hizo el amo y señor de la zona y permitió que el Khimki cobrara una comoda ventaja al final del primer cuarto (27-18). Una fuerte defensa del cuadro ruso al comienzo del segundo periodo hizo que el Gran Canaria no consiguiera anotar durante los primeros tres minutos, y con 31-18 en el marcador Aíto se vio obligado a solicitar un tiempo muerto para motivar a su equipo a reaccionar, aunque el cuadro canario siguió sin carburar. El trío Rice-Augustine-Davis se encargó de elevar la ventaja local al descanso hasta un concluyente 45-30 que eliminaba cualquier atisbo de remontada visitante.
El Gran Canaria arrancó la segunda parte con el quinteto inicial, y la dupla Báez-Kuric pareció mucho más metida en el partido que en los primeros dos cuartos. Tavares demostró que el Herbalife no estaba dispuesto a rendirse con un soberano tapón ante un gancho del estadounidense Davis. Sin embargo, Rice no dejaba de martillear la canasta visitante con tiros exteriores y penetraciones a canasta. La defensa presionante en toda la pista ideada por Aíto provocó un momentáneo cruce de cables en el ataque ruso, lo que sumado al descanso que Kurtinaitis dio a Rice permitió al Gran Canaria tomar aire. Sin embargo, el ataque visitante seguía siendo romo, por lo que el Khimki pudo incrementar su ventaja al final del tercer cuarto hasta los 22 puntos (68-46). En el último periodo, con todo ya decidido, Kurtinaitis puso en pista a sus jugadores reserva, lo que permitió al Gran Canaria reducir la desventaja y concluir con dignidad su primera final europea. |
