FIBA COUNTRY RANKING

BERTH ASSIGNMENT

• Each national federation which is a member of FIBA can register a certain number of teams in European competitions: SuproLeague (C1), Saporta Cup (C2), and Korać Cup (C3).  This number is determined by the country's classification in the FIBA Ranking corresponding to the last three seasons prior to the year in question.  For example, the number of teams per country which participate in 1998-99 season was determined by the FIBA Ranking encompassing the period 1996-98.  According to this classification, berths are distributed as follows:

Nonetheless, this assignment can undergo some further variations depending on different concepts.  In Euroleague, for example, teams finishing 6th in the Second Stage of Qualification Round (groups E-H) lose a berth for their country in next season.  These berths in C1 are gained by those countries whose teams reach the Semi-Final Round in Saporta Cup the same year.  As a general rule, a federation cannot have more than 3 teams in C1.  Should a semi-finalist in C2 provide one more berth for its country, in case it already has 3 berths assigned in C1, this berth will be transferred to the next federation in FIBA Ranking which has 2 teams in C1 (as long as one of its teams reached the 1/4 Final Round in C2 during the same season).

FIBA RANKING SYSTEM

• Each season, FIBA produces a ranking of national federations depending on the progress of their teams in European competitions: SuproLeague (C1), Saporta Cup (C2), and Korać Cup (C3).  This is known as FIBA Ranking for the season in question.  This classification is made with the average points of each country, which are calculated by dividing the sum of all its teams' points by the number of these.  The assignment of points to clubs is based on the following criteria:

• Each club will only receive the highest number of points obtained during the season in question.  Each national federation will accumulate the number of points for all its men's clubs for the season in question.  A final ranking coefficient will be established by dividing the result by the number of clubs which that national federation has registered.  The final FIBA Ranking will always be based on the results of the last three European club competition seasons.

• Each federation should register at least 4 teams in European competitions to obtain a ranking coefficient.  If this is not the case (because of low ranking, forfeit, or withdrawal) it receives a penalty.  Penalty points are calculated by multiplying the total number of points that the country accumulates by the number of teams that did not participate, and dividing the result by the total number of teams that a country was supposed to register.  These penalty points are then deducted from the total number of points accumulated by a country to yield its final coefficient. (Note: From season 1996-97 on, FIBA seems to calculate coefficients by simply dividing the total points by the number of teams).

Note: From season 2000-01 on, after the creation of ULEB Euroleague, FIBA Ranking is not fully applicable as in years before.
