Korać
Cup 1985-86
(From 2-10-1985 to 27-03-1986)
| COMPETITION SYSTEM
·
45 teams (best qualified clubs in domestic leagues) playing
knock-out rounds on a home and away basis. The aggregate score
of both games decides the winner.
·
The sixteen teams qualified after the knock-out rounds
enter a 1/4 Final stage, divided into four groups of four playing a round-robin.
The final standing is based on individual wins and defeats.
In case of a tie between two or more teams after this group
stage, the following criteria is used to decide the final standing:
1) one-to-one games between the teams; 2) basket average; 3)
individual wins and defeats.
·
The group winners after the 1/4 Final stage qualify for
a 1/2 Final knock-out round (X-pairings, home and away games). · The final is played on a home and away basis. |

| * This game set two new records in European basketball:
highest overall score in a single game (308 points) and highest personal scoring in one game (144
points for Zadar’s Zdenko Babić). Babić, who played all 40 minutes
against APOEL, exceeded in 32 points the world record set by Dražen Petrović the weekend
before, when he scored 112 points in the opening day of the Yugoslav
League against Olimpija Ljubljana (158-77). Zadar’s forward achieved
this incredible mark with a series of 16 two-point shots, 28 three-pointers
and 28 free throws. Rumor in Yugoslavia had it that Babić’s record
was schemed by Zadar’s coach Vlade Đurović, who had a personal confrontation
with Dražen Petrović during their time together at KK Šibenka and
sought “revenge” against his former pupil by minimizing his record.
Đurović, against a very weak Cypriot rival, ordered his men to finish
all their attacking plays in Babić, who scored an average of 1,8 baskets
per minute. (a) Game played on 10-10-1985. |

| * The first leg was suspended in minute 9 (with Olympique
Antibes winning 14-17) when one of the basket boards in Hagen’s court
was broken; although a replacement was quickly installed, it proved
inadequate and the officials cancelled the game. Later, FIBA decided
that the original two-legged match would be played as a single game
in Antibes. (a) Game played on 5-11-1985. |
