COMPETITION SYSTEM

·          37 teams (best qualified clubs in domestic leagues) playing knock-out rounds on a home and away basis. The aggregate score of both games decides the winner.

·          The sixteen teams qualified after the knock-out rounds enter a 1/4 Final stage, divided into four groups of four playing a round-robin. The final standing is based on individual wins and defeats. In case of a tie between two or more teams after this group stage, the following criteria is used to decide the final standing: 1) one-to-one games between the teams; 2) basket average; 3) individual wins and defeats.

·          The group winners after the 1/4 Final stage qualify for a 1/2 Final knock-out round (X-pairings, home and away games).

·          The final is played at a predetermined venue.

RESUMEN (SUMMARY)

Pese a que el Limoges partía como favorito en la final de la Copa Korać, durante gran parte del encuentro no demostró esta condición y estuvo a merced de su rival, el joven y aguerrido equipo yugoslavo KK Šibenka, que dominó ampliamente al cuadro galo durante muchas fases del encuentro. La mayor ventaja del conjunto balcánico se produjo en el minuto 14 (28-38), gracias a la excelente labor del joven y prometedor escolta Dražen Petrović ―especialmente en la distribución de juego― y del pívot Branko Macura ―que se mostró demoledor bajo los tableros y anuló casi por completo a Kiffin en esta primera mitad. Únicamente el escolta norteamericano Ed Murphy mantenía a flote las esperanzas del Limoges, sobre todo en una portentosa primera parte en la que consiguió 24 puntos (con 9 canastas de 14 intentos y 6 tiros libres convertidos de 6 lanzados). No obstante, y pese al dominio yugoslavo en casi todos los aspectos del juego, al descanso se llegó con un marcador igualado (46-49).

 

En la segunda mitad continuó mandando el equipo de Šibenik, de la mano de un inspiradísimo Dražen Petrović, y los hombres de Faruk Kulenović lograron alcanzar una nueva máxima ventaja (56-67, min. 26). Sin embargo, los franceses no perdieron comba y, gracias al resurgir de Kiffin (autor en este periodo de 19 de sus 21 puntos), se situaron a tan sólo un punto de sus rivales (70-71, min. 30). Pese a que Petrović logró mantener al Šibenka por delante gracias a sus acciones individuales, el resurgir del Limoges era ya un hecho, y el mejor juego colectivo de los franceses acabó reflejándose en su primera ventaja desde el 0-2 inicial (76-75, min. 33) tras una canasta bajo tablero de Kiffin. A partir de ese momento se impuso la mayor experiencia del Limoges, y su base internacional Jean-Michel Sénégal no tuvo problemas para controlar con tranquilidad el desesperado pressing a toda pista de sus rivales. Al final, victoria del Limoges por 90 a 84 (máxima ventaja obtenida por los franceses a lo largo de todo el encuentro).
