Korać Cup 1976-77

(From 19-10-1976 to 5-04-1977)

COMPETITION SYSTEM

·          27 teams (best qualified clubs in domestic leagues) playing knock-out rounds on a home and away basis. The aggregate score of both games decides the winner.

·          The twelve teams qualified after the knock-out rounds enter a 1/4 Final stage, divided into four groups of three playing a round-robin. The final standing is based on individual wins and defeats. In case of a tie between two or more teams after this group stage, the following criteria is used to decide the final standing: 1) one-to-one games between the teams; 2) basket average; 3) individual wins and defeats.

·          The group winners after the 1/4 Final stage qualify for a 1/2 Final knock-out round (X-pairings, home and away games).

·          The final is played at a predetermined venue.

[Note: Alleging lack of sport and economic interest, the Spanish teams eligible to participate in Korać Cup this season (FC Barcelona and CB Estudiantes, as well as their substitutes CB Círculo Católico and CD Manresa) waived their right.]

* Raffaelli, a naturalized Italian player born in Argentina―who was already cleared as a national player by the Italian Lega and became a regular starter in Alco during the whole season―, was originally selected for the 10-man squad in the final, but FIBA banned his participation just before this game, as his documents were still under investigation.
