Korać Cup 2001-02

(From 26-09-2001 to 17-04-2002)

 

 

COMPETITION SYSTEM

·          67 teams (best qualified clubs in domestic leagues) play knock-out rounds on a home and away basis. The aggregate score of both games decides the winner.

·          The 32 teams qualified after the 1/32 Final round enter a 1/16 Final stage, divided into eight groups of four playing a round-robin. The final standing is based on individual wins and defeats. In case of a tie between two or more teams after this group stage, the following criteria is used to decide the final standing: 1) one-to-one games between the teams; 2) basket average; 3) individual wins and defeats.

·          The group winners and runners-up after the 1/16 Final stage qualify for an 1/8 Final knock-out round (X-pairings, home and away games). The eight winners advance further to the rounds of 1/4 Final and 1/2 Final (also with home and away games).

·          The final is played on a home and away basis.

Les cougars (los pumas) ―sobrenombre del SLUC Nancy― “rugieron” con fuerza en el partido de ida de la final de la Copa Korać (última edición de este torneo antes de su fusión con la Copa Saporta en la temporada 2002-03) y derrotaron al BK Lokomotiv por un aplastante 98-72, con lo que dejaron bien encarrilado su primer título europeo.

 

Los loreneses dominaron durante todo el partido a sus rivales rusos, que partían como favoritos al título, aunque realizaron un partido nefasto y nunca tuvieron opciones de victoria. La labor anotadora en el equipo francés corrió a cargo principalmente del base Stevin Smith (23 puntos), ayudado en esta faceta por el también base Joseph Gomis (18 puntos), aunque la victoria de SLUC Nancy se cimentó en las estadísticas colectivas del equipo (un total de seis jugadores lograron dobles dígitos). Pese a que el partido comenzó con cierta igualdad, se rompió definitivamente en el segundo cuarto, con un parcial de 30-15 que situó al SLUC Nancy al descanso con una ventaja de 16 puntos que sería ya definitiva (48-32).

RESUMEN (SUMMARY)

Pese a contar con una renta considerable lograda en el partido de ida, el SLUC Nancy afrontaba el encuentro en tierras rusas con cierta inquietud, sabedor de la calidad del equipo ruso (hecho al que se unía, además, la importante baja por lesión de su pívot internacional Cyril Julian). Su preocupación no era injustificada, puesto que el BK Lokomotiv estuvo a punto de darle la vuelta a la eliminatoria: en el minuto 36 vencía por 22 puntos de diferencia (86-64) y estaba a sólo cuatro de empatar en el global.

 

Los hombres de Sylvain Lautié sufrieron en la pista desde los primeros minutos. El enorme poder intimidador de Eurelijus Žukauskas (2,18 m) causaba estragos en la zona francesa. El SLUC Nancy aguantaba el tipo gracias a los puntos de un excepcional Vincent Masingue y la labor defensiva de Fabien Dubos. De esta manera, las diferencias se mantenían por debajo de los diez puntos (34-24, min. 17) y al descanso del partido se llegó con una leve ventaja del Lokomotiv (39-33). Los comienzos del tercer cuarto fueron plenamente esperanzadores para el cuadro francés, puesto que incluso llegó a ponerse por delante (41-42, min. 24). Pero a partir de ese momento la fatiga comenzó a causar estragos en el SLUC Nancy, que había mantenido su cinco inicial durante muchos minutos en pista. Los rusos pisaron entonces el acelerador, apoyados en los puntos de Kudelin y Robinson y en el rebote ofensivo, y con un parcial de 24-5 volvieron a lograr una máxima diferencia (65-47, min. 29) que les abría las puertas de la remontada de cara al último cuarto de partido, pese a que tres puntos salvadores de Joseph Gomis dejaban el marcador en un +15 (65-50) al finalizar el tercer periodo. Por entonces, los rusos se mostraban confiados en poder anular los 26 puntos de desventaja del partido de ida. Los loreneses echaban en falta la participación de su base Stevin Smith, determinante en Francia aunque totalmente “desaparecido en combate” en este encuentro de vuelta (autor de un pobre 0 de 5 en tiros de campo). Sin embargo, los jugadores franceses supieron aguantar el tipo hasta el final del partido y consiguieron inscribir su nombre como ganadores de la última Copa Korać de la historia.
