Cup Winners’ Cup 1990-91

(From 25-09-1990 to 26-03-1991)

 

 

COMPETITION SYSTEM

·          19 teams (domestic Cup champions) playing knock-out rounds on a home and away basis. The aggregate score of both games decides the winner.

·          The eight teams qualified after the 1/8 Final round enter a 1/4 Final stage, divided into two groups of four playing a round-robin. The final standing is based on individual wins and defeats. In case of a tie between two or more teams after this group stage, the following criteria is used to decide the final standing: 1) one-to-one games between the teams; 2) basket average; 3) individual wins and defeats.

·          The group winners and runners-up after the 1/4 Final stage qualify for a 1/2 Final knock-out round (X-pairings). The final is played at a predetermined venue.

RESUMEN (SUMMARY)

De forma increíble, el CAI Zaragoza dejó escapar una Recopa de Europa que tenía ganada a cinco minutos del final, después de superar un ambiente inusitadamente hostil protagonizado por los seguidores del PAOK ―ante la aquiescencia de la FIBA y la permisividad de la policía suiza― y a un equipo griego que fue claramente inferior durante la mayor parte del encuentro. El partido estuvo marcado por los incidentes que protagonizaron los seguidores griegos antes del partido (agresiones a los aficionados maños en las calles de Ginebra y robo de entradas), durante el encuentro (lanzamiento de objetos e interrupción del juego) y al final (múltiples destrozos en la pista).

 

El CAI Zaragoza no se dejó impresionar por el infernal ambiente que habían creado los seguidores del PAOK en la pista de patinaje de Ginebra y dominó durante la primera mitad gracias a una fuerte defensa bajo el aro —donde Andreu lograba frenar claramente a Fassoulas— y sobre los peligrosos lanzamientos exteriores de Prelević. Pese a que ni Davis ni Magee entraron en juego en los primeros minutos, el conjunto maño logró una primera ventaja importante (10-17). Dragan Šakota decidió jugar entonces con tres hombres altos en pista (Barlow-Fassoulas-Papachronis) y, coincidiendo con la ausencia de Andreu, el PAOK logró igualar el marcador (21-21). Pese a todo, y sin estar jugando un gran partido, el CAI pudo irse al descanso con una ventaja de cinco puntos (31-36) y con Fassoulas cargado con cuatro faltas personales.

 

En la reanudación, el PAOK salió lanzado y, merced a una fuerte defensa, logró empatar a 41 (min. 25). No obstante, y coincidiendo con la posterior eliminación de Fassoulas, los seguidores griegos comenzaron a lanzar monedas y todo tipo de objetos a la cancha, ante lo cual el árbitro principal Gerrard decidió suspender el partido y refugiarse en los vestuarios. Fue el propio Panagiotis Fassoulas quien tuvo que tranquilizar a sus seguidores a través de la megafonía. Al cabo de ocho minutos se reanudó el partido, en el que los griegos continuaron defendiendo al límite de lo reglamentario, lo que les valió las sucesivas eliminaciones de Papachronis y Ioannou. Pese a los intentos de acercamiento por parte del PAOK, el CAI aguantó el tipo gracias a los triples de Magee y Davis, y a falta de poco más de diez minutos parecía tener el partido en el bolsillo, ya que ganaba por ocho puntos (51-59). Pero fue entonces cuando Barlow, muy inactivo durante gran parte del partido, decidió tirar de su equipo y comenzó a anotar con facilidad bajo el tablero. Prelević también empezó a sembrar el pánico con sus triples. En esta tesitura, ningún jugador del CAI pareció asumir la responsabilidad, y las diferencias se fueron recortando poco a poco en medio de un juego trabado y lleno de personales. A falta de cuatro minutos y medio, el marcador era de empate a 70. En medio de un final igualado e incierto, Davis cometió su quinta falta personal a falta de poco menos de dos minutos, y ése fue el mazazo definitivo que hundió al CAI, ya que era el único tirador con garantías de su equipo. Un garrafal campo atrás de Magee, una clara bandeja errada por Ruiz Lorente y un “1+1” fallado por Pepe Arcega acabaron con las últimas esperanzas mañas. Al final, victoria del PAOK en un encuentro que se le escapó increíblemente al CAI, cuando más fácil parecía su victoria.
