Euroleague 1996-97

(From 19-09-1996 to 24-04-1997)

GAME DETAILS (SPANISH CLUBS)

(The first five players in each team are the starting line-up, ordered according to their basic position: PG-F-C; the players in blue are the used substitutes)

FIRST STAGE

KK Croatia Osiguranje Split - FC Barcelona

65-75 (25-37)

VENUE: Športski Centar “Gripe” (Split)

DATE: 18-09-1996 (20:30 h)

ATTENDANCE: 3.000

REFEREES: Tiziano Zancanella (ITA), Peter Klingbiel (GER)

FOULED OUT: Tvrdić (36’), Prkačin (38’) / Fetisov (36’)

TOP SCORER: Artūras Karnišovas (24)

[Incidents: The game was not played in the main hall of Sport Center “Gripe” (with a seating capacity for 7,000 spectators), but in a smaller one (with only 2,500 seats, although for this game it was overcrowded with around 3,000 fans). Not only was this secondary hall insufficiently conditioned for a Euroleague game, but also very dangerous for the players, as some sec tions of the inbound line were within a meter of a solid wall.]

[Incidents: With 3.9 seconds left and FC Barcelona winning by three points (75-72), Ðorđević committed a personal foul on Murdock. The American point guard of Teamsystem converted the first shot and, as expected, intentionally missed the second. Myers grabbed the rebound and missed his shot, but Gay tied the game in the last second with a tap-in. However, after consulting with the table officials, the English referee Alan Richardson, in a very controversial decision, disallowed the basket arguing that it was converted out of time; in addition, he punished Teamsystem’s American center with an offensive foul on Karnišovas (his fifth). In the turmoil of the Italian protests, the referees even forgot about the two free throws of the Lithuanian forward. Twenty minutes later, Karnišovas, who had already taken a shower, had to change clothes again and return to the court for his two free throws, but everybody had left and the baskets had already been dismantled. After the game, the president of the Italian Lega, Angelo Rovati, sent an official protest to FIBA for what he considered “the ultimate and most flagrant abuse on the Italian teams, who have written the history of European basketball”.]
