European
League 1994-95
(From 8-09-1994 to 13-04-1995)
COMPETITION SYSTEM
·
42 teams (domestic champions and a variable number of
runners-up in the most important leagues) playing knock-out
rounds on a home and away basis. The aggregate score of both
games decides the winner.
·
The sixteen remaining teams after the knock-out rounds
enter an 1/8 Final Group Stage, divided
into two groups of eight playing
a round-robin. The final standing
is based on individual wins and defeats. In case of a tie between
two or more teams after this group stage, the following criteria
is used to decide the final classification: 1) number of wins
in one-to-one games between the teams; 2) basket average between
the teams; 3) general basket average within the group.
·
The top four teams from each group after the 1/8 Final
Stage qualify for a 1/4 Final Playoff (X-pairings, best of 3
games). · The four winners of the 1/4 Final Playoff qualify for the Final Stage (Final Four), played at a predetermined venue. |

NOTE: A very sad and strange incident happened in Piraeus after the second game of the series CSKA-Olympiakós: on Wednesday, a day before the decisive match, Panov, Kudelin, and Morgunov fainted during CSKA’s training in Peace and Friendship Stadium and had to be taken to hospital. Most other Russian players also complained of strong neck pains and body weakness. Some members of CSKA suspected a couple of water bottles, because they had small holes around the top, and had them analysed by Greek doctors, who confirmed the existence of a chemical substance in the water. At hospital, Panov got ever worse and had to be taken to ICU, whereas Morgunov went into a comma. Although the Russian coach, Stanislav Erjomin, was left with only five men able to play (an one of them, Kudelin, in very poor physical conditions), the third game of the series was not postponed. Actually, the “game” was a pantomime: after 25 minutes, Kudelin couldn’t play anymore and committed his fifth personal foul, which left CSKA with only four players. In minute 35, Vadeev also fouled out, so Kisurin, Spiridonov, and Grezin had to play the rest of the game against five rivals. After the series, CSKA didn’t request an official FIBA investigation and Olympiakós officials swore they had nothing to do with it. The Athens incident was never cleared up... |
