Basketball Champions League 2022-23

(From 21-09-2022 to 14-05-2023)

COMPETITION SYSTEM

· 52 teams from countries affiliated to FIBA Europe are eligible to participate in the competition.

· 24 teams enter a Qualifying Stage, divided into three rounds (quarterfinals, semifinals and finals) played as a single game in four venues.

· The 4 winners after the Qualifying Stage join another 28 teams in a Regular Season, divided into eight groups of four teams each playing a round-robin.

· Runners-up and third-qualified teams in each Regular Season group access the Play-Ins, knock-out round played as a best of 3 games match-up.

· The eight winners of the Play-Ins and the eight group winners from the Regular Season access the Round of 16, with four groups of four teams each playing a round-robin.

· The group winners and runners-up after the Round of 16 access the 1/4 Finals (best of 3 series).

· The four winners of the 1/4 Finals qualify for the Final Stage (Final Four), played at a predetermined venue.

RESUMEN (SUMMARY)

El Telekom Baskets Bonn, la “cenicienta” de la Fase Final, derrotó al Hapoel Jerusalén en la final de la Liga de Campeones de la FIBA y conquistó su primer título europeo de la mano de un imparable T.J. Shorts (29 puntos). Al igual que hicieran en semifinales frente al anfitrión Unicaja, el conjunto alemán ahogó a sus rivales con una asfixiante defensa (¡únicamente 7 puntos pudo anotar el Hapoel en el primer cuarto!). El conjunto israelí, por su parte, también había destacado defensivamente frente al Lenovo Tenerife en la otra semifinal, por lo que se esperaba una final de baja anotación.

Tras la canasta inicial de Mareks Mejeris para el Hapoel (tras dos minutos de pérdidas de balón y lanzamientos errados por parte de ambos equipos), el Telekom Baskets, sin grandes excesos ofensivos, pasó a dominar en el juego y en el marcador. Al ecuador del primer cuarto, con únicamente dos nuevas canastas de T.J. Shorts y Tyson Ward, el choque se mantenía 4-2 para el cuadro alemán, una clara prueba de la tensión y la igualdad que se respiraban en el Carpena (en donde los aficionados israelíes, más numerosos y ruidosos que sus rivales, ponían la nota de color). Sebastián Herrera y T.J. Shorts cerraron un primer cuarto ultradefensivo con un parcial de 5-0 que empezó a encarrilar el encuentro para Telekom Baskets (14-7). Dos mates de Collin Malcolm y dos nuevas canastas de un desatado T.J. Shorts al comienzo del segundo cuarto ampliaron la renta alemana por encima de los diez puntos (25-12, min. 13). Levi Randolph era el único que mantenía a flote al Hapoel con sus canastas, y al descanso el equipo alemán empezaba a soñar con la proeza (37-28).

En el tercer cuarto, y espoleado por sus incansables aficionados, el conjunto israelí fue armándose de paciencia en cada jugada hasta reducir la ventaja del Telekom Baskets a únicamente dos puntos tras un triple de Levi Randolph (39-37, min. 24). Apareció entonces el escolta chileno Sebastián Herrera, que se inventó dos triples imposibles que calmaron el ímpetu del Hapoel (51-45, min. 28), aunque el resurgir de Speedy Smith mantuvo al cuadro israelí en el partido (57-55, min. 30). El último cuarto fue el escaparate para la consagración definitiva de T.J. Shorts. El base norteamericano (aunque nacionalizado macedonio) se hizo acreedor al título de MVP de la final con un espectáculo de penetraciones y canastas imposibles. Suyos fueron los siete primeros puntos del Telekom Baskets al comienzo del cuarto (64-58, min. 34). El Hapoel peleó hasta el final, pero los puntos de Levi Randolph no fueron suficientes y el intercambio de canastas y faltas en los minutos finales favoreció a un Telekom Baskets Bonn que hizo historia en Málaga.
